computer hardware technologies- types of physical media
Physical media refers to tangible storage devices or formats used to store and distribute data, including audio, video, and software. Several types of physical media include Compact Discs (CD), Digital Versatile Discs (DVD), Blu-ray Disc (BD), floppy disks, USB flash drives, hard disk drives (HDD), solid-state drives (SSD), memory cards, magnetic tape, VHS and Betamax tapes, cassette tapes, and vinyl records.
CD-ROM is read-only, while CD-R allows data to be written onto the disc once, and CD-RW can be reused for data storage. DVD-ROM has a larger storage capacity than CD-ROM and is commonly used for movies and software. DVD-R and DVD+R are recordable once, while DVD-RW and DVD+RW are rewritable. BD-ROM is a high-capacity optical disc primarily used for high-definition video and data storage. BD-R is recordable once, and BD-RE is rewritable.
Floppy disks are a magnetic storage medium with limited capacity, mostly used in the past for software distribution and data storage. USB flash drives are portable, rewritable, and durable storage devices with USB connectivity. HDDs and SSDs are commonly used for large-scale data storage in computers, with external HDDs being portable and connecting via USB. Memory cards, such as SD and MicroSD cards, are small, portable flash memory cards commonly used in cameras, smartphones, and other devices. Magnetic tape is used in data storage and historically used for data backup and archival purposes.
Analog videotapes, such as VHS and Betamax tapes, were historically used for recording and playing back video content. Cassette tapes were used for audio recording and playback in the past, while vinyl records were used for recording and playing back music.
Each type of physical media has its advantages and limitations, and the choice often depends on factors like storage capacity, data transfer speed, and compatibility with specific devices. In recent years, digital distribution has become increasingly popular, reducing the reliance on physical media for certain types of content.
